Feedback is like physiotherapy. Nobody looks forward to it. It stretches you in ways that feel awkward, sometimes even painful. In the moment, you want to resist, avoid, or walk away. But here’s the truth: physiotherapy isn’t punishment. It’s recovery. It’s alignment. It’s strength-building. And the same goes for feedback. It exposes weak spots you can’t see yourself. It pushes you past habits that no longer serve you. It may hurt temporarily, but it prevents deeper damage later. Leaders who avoid feedback are like athletes who skip rehab—eventually, the injury catches up. Leaders who embrace it build resilience, flexibility, and longevity. Because feedback, like physiotherapy, isn’t about the discomfort you feel in the moment. It’s about the strength you carry forward. Why (some) Indian Leaders Still Get Offended by Feedback Here’s a paradox. The higher a leader climbs, the fewer people tell them the truth. Not because the truth disappears—but because everyone learns it’s safer to stay silent. And in India, this silence is deafening. We have built a leadership culture that treats feedback as offense. A junior offering insight is seen as “out of line.” A peer raising concerns is labeled “difficult.” A senior challenging a decision is dismissed as “political.” The irony is painful: feedback is judged not by what is said, but by who says it. The messenger overshadows the message. This fragility is not new. We grew up in homes where feedback was comparison. Schools where it was humiliation. Workplaces where it was judgment. For many Indian leaders, feedback is less about growth and more about izzat. The result? Every piece of feedback feels like an attack on identity. Why This is Dangerous - When leaders cannot take feedback, organizations stop giving it. Teams play safe. Problems stay hidden. Innovation slows down. And blind spots at the top quietly grow until they explode into crises. The danger isn’t the critical feedback. The real danger is the feedback never given. What Needs to Change Leaders who thrive in today’s world are those who can - Separate ego from role. Treat feedback as professional oxygen, not personal insult. Nurturing a Growth Mindset: The Psychological Soil of Wellbeing and Fulfilment “The Growth Mindset “is one of the most transformative concepts in the field of Psychology. Coined by Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, a growth mindset refers to the belief that our abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, effort, and learning. In contrast to a fixed mindset — the belief that qualities like intelligence and talent are static — a growth mindset empowers individuals to persist through challenges, reframe failure as feedback, and remain open to possibility. But beyond academic achievement and professional success, a growth mindset is deeply intertwined with mental health and wellbeing. According to a 2018 study published in Journal of Youth and Adolescence, individuals with a growth mindset reported significantly lower levels of depression and anxiety. Why? Because they were more likely to perceive setbacks as part of a natural learning curve rather than evidence of personal inadequacy. When challenges become opportunities rather than threats, our stress response softens — and our resilience strengthens. This aligns with the principles of Positive Psychology, the field founded by Martin Seligman, which emphasizes cultivating personal strengths, fostering optimism, and finding meaning. A growth mindset enables what Seligman describes as “learned optimism”: the belief that one’s actions can influence outcomes, even in the face of adversity. This sense of agency — known as self-efficacy — has been shown to be one of the strongest predictors of long-term psychological wellbeing. Furthermore, the relationship between mindset and wellbeing is reinforced in the Broaden-and-Build Theory developed by Barbara Fredrickson. This theory posits that positive emotions like curiosity, hope, and pride broaden our momentary thought-action repertoires, allowing us to build enduring personal resources. A growth mindset naturally activates these emotions. When we approach life with curiosity rather than judgement, and effort instead of avoidance, we cultivate the inner conditions for flourishing. However, it is important to acknowledge that a growth mindset doesn’t guarantee easy days but it does promise worthwhile ones. Life will inevitably include grief, failure, and pain. But those with a growth mindset are more likely to interpret suffering as part of the journey, not as the end of the road. So how do we nurture this mindset in ourselves and others? • By normalising failure as a part of mastery. • By celebrating effort, not just outcomes. • By offering feedback that reinforces process, not fixed traits. • And by cultivating self-compassion, as proposed by Kristin Neff, which allows us to hold our struggles with kindness rather than criticism. In conclusion, a growth mindset is a scientifically grounded, psychologically protective, and spiritually enriching orientation to life.

Understanding the New Licensing Requirements for Psychologists in India There’s been a lot of confusion lately around the new licensing and registration guidelines for psychologists under the NACHP draft bill — what titles apply, what qualifications are needed, and how it compares with other allied health professions. To make things simpler, I’ve put together a short PDF that breaks down the different categories, titles, and qualification requirements — all in one place.
