It was a privilege to be part of the Inaugural panel at Suryacon 2025, joining senior leaders from the renewable energy sector to deliberate on the future of utility-scale solar projects in India. The session offered a holistic lens on the sector – from bid submission to plant operation – while reflecting on the renewable market outlook for 2025, evolving policy and regulatory shifts, and the roadmap for India’s RE targets. We also debated the opportunities in open access, captive, and group captive models, as well as the growing importance of solar-wind hybrids, floating solar, and storage integration. The discussion underscored that while the sector is brimming with opportunities, challenges remain – be it grid integration, payment cycles, supply chain bottlenecks, or financing trends. Yet, the consensus was clear: with the right government support, regulatory clarity, and private sector innovation, India has the potential to accelerate its clean energy transition and unlock the next wave of utility-scale renewable growth. Excited to continue contributing to this journey of scaling up solar and shaping a sustainable energy future for India. MERIT India: https://meritindia.in/ An Opportunity waiting to be Tapped. Eight years ago, following deliberations with the states, it was resolved that states would regularly share their merit order dispatch data. This led to the launch of the MERIT portal on June 23, 2017, by the Government of India , a step forward in promoting transparency and efficiency. Yet, a glance at the current snapshot reveals persistent gaps. State wise Prices vary widely, from ₹3 to ₹9/kWh, pointing to significant untapped potential for optimisation, arbitrage, and market coupling. Several states appear to be reporting the highest cost as the marginal cost, a technically flawed interpretation in a constrained physical system. In many cases, marginal costs are not being extracted at all. Despite steady progress, it's evident that the concept of marginal cost, derived through the well proven linear programming (LP) techniques is yet to be fully internalised and adopted across states. As India prepares to embrace deeper power market reforms and even derivatives, addressing these inconsistencies becomes crucial. These are low-hanging fruits, and resolving them and fixing, would require a sustained policy push, regulatory rigour, and focused capacity building at the state level. India can do it and can't afford to miss this opportunity for meaningful improvement. Driving India’s Gas-Based Future: Highlights from the FICCI Roundtable We had the privilege of supporting FICCI as the Knowledge Partner for the Roundtable on “Indian Gas Infrastructure – Pathway to a Gas-Based Economy.” The session was chaired by Shri Kolluru Krishan Chair Energy & Green Economy working group FICCI, in the august presence of Shri Vinod Seshan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Govt of India; Dr. S. Sharma, Joint Chief Controller, PESO; and Shri A. Ramana Kumar, Member, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB). The roundtable brought together leaders from Adani, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, BP, GAIL (India) Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (Iocl), Indian Gas Exchange (IGX), Jindal Steel, Mahanagar Gas Limited, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), Petronet LNG Limited, Pipeline Infrastructure Limited, Reliance, SAGE, and several other key organisations across India’s energy value chain. Coming in the backdrop of the Vision 2040 HLEC report released by PNGRB, the deliberations were rich, forward-looking, and anchored in the collective ambition to accelerate India’s transition to a gas-based economy. Key suggestions and comments included: 1. Role and efforts of MoPNG in enhancing gas reserves and openness to work on aspects such as use of depleted fields as carbon sink for CCUS. 2. Re-evaluating transnational gas pipelines as a cost-competitive import option. 3. PESO to enable LNG-powered fleets for vehicles transporting LPG/MS/HSD to accelerate gas adoption . 4. PESO to enable allowing LNG-based truck operations in mining. 5. Harmonising tax structures—CBG is under GST while natural gas remains under VAT; the long-standing request to bring natural gas under GST was reiterated. 6. Removing central excise duty on CNG to improve affordability and viability for end consumers. 7. For CGDs, facilitating single-window clearances, and uniform ROU and restoration norms across states. 8. Considering postalised tariffs under PNGRB to encourage wider gas consumption and development of new demand centres. 9. Encouraging relinquishment of domestic LPG cylinders in areas with established PNG access to improve pipeline utilisation. 10. Enabling an emission-factored merit order dispatch to prioritise cleaner gas-based power generation. 11. OEMs offering warranty parity for CBG in line with CNG vehicles to build confidence and support CBG adoption. 12. Formulating a clear policy on boil-off gas management, including a fair and transparent pricing structure at CGS locations. India’s rapid urbanisation presents a defining opportunity to integrate low-carbon, energy-efficient solutions into the country’s building stock—set to more than double by 2050. Build Right the First Time, a new report by RMI and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), highlights five high-impact interventions to decarbonise India’s buildings sector: 1. Cool Roofs – Lower indoor temperatures and reduce cooling energy demand 2. 5-Star Ceiling Fans – Deliver up to 44% energy savings 3. Super-Efficient ACs – Use nearly 58% less energy than standard 3-star models 4. Low-Carbon Cement – Can avoid up to 1.4 Gt CO₂e in embodied emissions 5. Low-Carbon Steel – Offers potential to cut industrial emissions by 1.5 Gt CO₂e Together, these measures could prevent up to 8 Gt of CO₂ emissions by 2050—equivalent to almost three years of India’s current annual emissions. Heard of #GDPK? Peter Drucker had said - 'The most valuable assets of the 21st century institution, whether business or non business, will be its knowledge workers & their #productivity". Paying heed, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation or #Mospi has revived its own 2021 idea to capture the #knowledgeeconomy to supplement #GDP. The aim is to develop a framework to comprehensively capture the impact of knowledge on economic and social life in #India. It's knowledge-centric measurement will encapsulate contribution of segments like #Innovation & #IntellectualProperty & assets to the Indian economy. Note, currently, all expenditures on intellectual property products (IPP) are recorded under gross fixed capital formation (GFCF), which is a key indicator of knowledge production. https://lnkd.in/d-VGQPbx
