Sketch Pros and Cons
- Strong vector design tools with professional typography and color support
- Mature component/library/symbol system and design system support
- Built-in prototyping with good transitions and overlays
- Developer handoff features including export and inspect
- Real-time collaboration, version history and comment threads
- Native editing is macOS-only; Windows/Linux users rely on the web app for viewing only
- Raster/image editing capabilities are basic compared to dedicated raster tools
- Responsive/auto layout features are less powerful than some competitors
- Subscription costs for collaboration tiers can add up for large teams
- Some features (e.g., MCP server) are not available via the Mac App Store version
The price is right and it runs faster than Illustrator. Importing files is simple.
To be fair, more recent versions may be improved. However, using it 2014-present I've run into loads of bugs with this program. For some reason, certain files will have features just not working at all and it slows the workflow to a crawl. I have to be very Zen about it. The results look good at the end of the day if you make it through.
I use Sketch for UI and graphic design. Its the main program I use for this because of the affordable price and speed. The quality is probably improved in the recent update so you get a good product with clean typography.
What I like best about Sketch is that it gives me the ability to work with other designers in a vector based format who don’t have access to or work with the Adobe suite. Its simplified format allows to-the-point designs and an ability to translate pretty well into .svg style files.
The main thing I dislike in Sketch is that it’s not conducive to mass exporting items in a .svg format. I’m not sure if it is just that I don’t know how to use the program to its fullest potential (although a fairly detailed google search didn’t give me any new information), but I could only export one item at a time to get the .svg file to work without corrupting. It would be nice to have a way to seamlessly export files.
The main business problem that I am solving with sketch is for PC users to create and transfer their vector graphics to me. When they use Sketch, I can use their files without having to create anything new from scratch.
Easy to use for beginners. It could be potentially useful for new startups without the budget for a designer.
The lack of cross-platform compatibility with Adobe products and lack of advanced features makes it impractical for anything beyond simple compositions.
I've had far more problems with Sketch than anything else - I receive lots of files from people who have hired designers and used sketch, and the logos & files tend to be imprecise and annoying to convert to more universal formats.
