Abstract:

William Carey Dowd of Tarboro, N.C., was a University of North Carolina student and tutor.

The collection includes short essays on various topics, presumably written by Dowd while he was a student at the University of North Carolina; Dowd's valedictory address to the class of 1858; drafts of a letter from Dowd expressing his appreciation to his parents; diplomas; and a combined pen-pencil awarded to Dowd.

Background

Biographical / historical:

William Carey Dowd (1835-1860) was born in Tarboro, N.C., the son of prominent North Carolina Baptist minister the Reverend Patrick Dowd (1799-1866). William Carey Dowd graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1858 and became a tutor in Latin until his health caused his resignation in winter of 1858. Dowd went to Florida for his health, and in summer of 1859 he travelled to Red Sulphur Springs, Va., seeking treatment for tuberculosis. Dowd's health failed to improve, and he died in Christiansburg, Va., en route home from Red Sulphur Springs to Tarboro.

The collection includes short essays on various topics, such as "Virgil,""Classics," and "The Value of Society," presumably written by William Carey Dowd while he was a student at the University of North Carolina; Dowd's valedictory address to the class of 1858; two drafts of a letter, 24 October 1857, from Dowd expressing his appreciation to his parents; Dowd's diploma from UNC; Dowd's certificate of membership in the Dialectic Society; and a combined pen-pencil awarded to Dowd as valedictorian of the class of 1858.
