Comet Emoji Meaning

A comet, an icy, rocky space object that can form a tail of gas and dust when near the Sun.

Depictions vary considerably by platform. Apple, Samsung, and Huawei portray fiery orange meteors resembling burning rocks entering Earth’s atmosphere, while other platforms depict it as an icy-blue comet streaking downward, as viewed in the night sky. Given this notable design divergence, the draft Emoji 18.0 repertoire includes a distinct 🪋 Meteor emoji. Emoji 18.0 is expected for approval in September 2026.

May be used for meteors and other celestial bodies, as well as for content concerning space more generally. Also occasionally used for flair or flourish.

Not to be confused with 🌠 Shooting Star, though their applications may overlap.

Apple’s comet was previously blue and descending, as was a previous Microsoft design. A previous Google design depicted multiple comets, while Samsung's initial design depicted a collection of shooting stars.

Comet was approved as part of Unicode 1.1 in 1993 and added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.
