SPLICING TAPE

WHAT IS SPLICING TAPE?

Splicing tapes are most commonly used, in a variety of manufacturing industries, to attach an already machine threaded substrate to the new substrate roll. Splicing tape uses range across different industries, as this process of splicing the substrates, using splice tape, allows operators to avoid lengthy downtimes and run continuous production without having to re-thread the material through their equipment. Understanding what splicing tape is used for is crucial in maintaining production efficiency across various industries.

Elite Tape offers an extensive line of single-coated, double-sided splicing tape, and double-coated splicing tape formulations that will function in the most complex applications. What is splicing tape? Essentially, it is a type of adhesive tape designed specifically for connecting materials during production. Splicing tape uses can vary depending on the application, but the most important things to remember in identifying the right splice tape is finding the balance of initial adhesive bond, shear holding power, and temperature resistance required for your application.

WHERE ARE SPLICING TAPES USED?

Single-Coated, Double-Sided Splicing Tapes, and Double-Coated Splicing Tapes are the types of splices widely used in manufacturing industries such as pressure sensitive adhesive coating, flexible film and paper coating, commercial printing, newspaper printing, pulp & paper manufacturing, corrugated board manufacturing, converting, die-cutting, as well as roll tabbing and core start-up. What is splicing tape used for in these industries? It ensures seamless transitions between rolls, maintaining production efficiency without costly downtime.

NON-REPULPABLE SPLICING TAPES:

Non-Repulpable Splicing tapes are most commonly used for core startup, splicing and roll end tabbing in the coating, laminating, printing, converting and die cut processes. Elite Tape Splicing tapes are available with PET, PVC, PE and PP Carriers with solvent acrylic, rubber and silicone based, pressure-sensitive adhesive systems. Our single-coated and double-coated splicing tapes are specifically designed to provide superior adhesion to the most challenging LSE surfaces such as coated films and papers, as well as provide high heat and shear resistance for all of your application conditions. Understanding how to use rubber splicing tape is essential for achieving optimal performance in these processes. Elite Tape’s quality product line will give the stability to ensure your process continues running at optimal speed without interruption. REPULPABLE SPLICING TAPES:

Repulpable Splicing tapes are most commonly used by pulp & paper mills for their manufacturing and converting processes. Repulpable Splicing tapes have either a paper-based or non-woven, tissue-based carrier with a water-soluble, pressure-sensitive adhesive system which allows these tapes to be 100% biodegradable, recyclable and repulpable. Tape splicing with these repulpable options ensures that your process continues running at optimal speed without interruption. Elite Tape’s quality product line will provide stability to ensure your process continues running at optimal speed without interruption.

TYPES OF SPLICES:

  • Overlap Splice:

Attaching two substrates by overlapping the roll ends and applying a double coated splicing tape to bond the overlapped section. This type of splice ensures a strong and durable connection between the materials, commonly used in high-speed applications to avoid failure of the splices.

  • Butt Splice:

Attaching two substrates by butting the roll ends together and applying a single-coated splicing tape over the top and bottom of the seam.

  • Flying Splice:

Overlap or flying splicing is done by applying a double-coated splicing tape to the end of the roll and removing the release liner of the tape to expose the opposite side of the adhesive to the new substrate roll.

  • W or V Splice:

Most commonly used in newsprint and paper mills. The W or V pattern allows for greater stability of the splice to avoid tearing.

TYPES OF ADHESIVES THAT ARE IMPORTANT WHEN CHOOSING A SPLICING TAPE:

  • Silicone Adhesives:

For adhering to LSE substrates, adhering to silicone coated substrates, operating temperatures 425F-500F.

  • Solvent Acrylic Adhesives:

For adhering to HSE and LSE surfaces, good initial tack and strong shear strength, optical clarity, plasticizer and UV resistant, chemical & oil resistant, operating temperatures up to 350F, short term 450F.

  • Rubber Adhesives:

For adhering to LSE surfaces, excellent initial tack, chemical & oil resistant, operating temperatures up to 150F, permanent adhesive bond in temporary applications.
