How The Pump Works

How Our Dredge Pump Handles Solids

Simulation video of the EDDY Pump compared to a centrifugal pump. The EDDY pump shows its superior ability for high viscous pumping, high corrosive pumping, high specific gravity pumping, and high solids pumping, while being a low maintenance pump that is also a non-clogging pump.

Clog-Free Pumping

Non-Clogging Slurry Pump Design

The EDDY Pump’s open rotor design with high tolerances allow anything that will go into the intake to be passed through the discharge without issues.

As you can see in the 4″ EDDY Pump shown above, the tolerance between the rotor and the volute easily allows the passage of a man’s arm , while the tolerance in a centrifugal pump is significantly less. In a 1-inch to 12-inch EDDY Pump the tolerance ranges from 1-12 inches.

This translates to a significant amount of solids and debris that passes through without clogging the pump.

Dredge Project Consulting

  • Easier to install and maintain, the horizontal slurry pump, a type of dredge pump, allows for quick access to pump components, making repair jobs straightforward. During repair jobs, pumps are completely disassembled for thorough inspection. All components are carefully inspected, and any parts not meeting standards are replaced. After reassembly, the pump is tested to ensure reliable performance. These steps help extend the service life of the hydraulic pump and maintain equipment reliability. EDDY Pump can also provide dredging project managers to oversee sediment projects and remediation projects, ensuring that all aspects of the dredging project are managed efficiently and in compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Requires more room, due to its larger footprint compared to vertical
  • Implementing best management practices and evaluating management alternatives are essential for effective material management in any dredging project.

Vertical Slurry Pump

  • Less smaller footprint, allowing the dredge pump to be implemented in hard to reach jobs

  • More versatile, can be cable hung straight down and inserted directly into medium to pump target material. The vertical slurry pump can also be used in mechanical dredging operations where minimal water addition is required.

  • The vertical slurry pump is typically situated within the excavator or dredging system so that it is optimally positioned for efficient material handling and performance.

  • More difficult to repair and tougher maintenance

Boosting Operational Efficiency

Non-Clogging & Lower Maintenance = Increased Profits

Challenge: Traditional Dredge & Slurry Pumps

In harsh conditions with sand, sludge, rocks, slurry, other traditional dredge pumps:

  • Routinely get clogged
  • Wear down quicker
  • Fail more often
  • Downtime for maintenance hurts your bottom line

Solution: Non-Clog EDDY Pumps

  • Open Rotor Design
  • Non-Clog, High Viscosity, High Specific Gravity, High Abrasives, Low pH Pumping Design
  • 40-70% Solids Pumping by Volume
  • Ability to pump objects of up to 11-inches in diameter
  • State-of-the-Art Research and Development Facilities
  • 100% American Made
  • Low Total Ownership Cost (See PDF)

Benefits and Technology Overview

Pass solids from 1-12 inches (rocks, rags, debris). The EDDY Pump’s open rotor design with high tolerances allow anything that will go into the intake to be passed through the discharge without issues.

Tolerance between the rotor and the volute in the 4″ EDDY Pump easily allows the passage of a man’s arm (*see picture below). Compared with the tolerance in a centrifugal pump, the EDDY Pump easily wins. Pump Range spans 1-inch through 12-inch EDDY Pump line, the tolerance ranges from 1-12 inches.

This translates to a significant amount of solids and debris pass through, without clogging the pump.  To learn more about the technology behind our pumps continue reading Here.

Permitting and Regulations

Dredging projects are subject to various established regulations and permitting requirements. Our team is well-versed in the regulatory framework governing dredging operations and can assist project owners in obtaining the necessary permits and approvals. We ensure that our clients comply with all relevant laws and regulations, minimizing the risk of problems, delays, fines, or legal repercussions. By staying informed about the latest regulatory changes, we help our clients navigate the permitting process smoothly and efficiently.

Optimized Pumping Performance

High Viscosity

The EDDY Pump rotor acts as a mixer on thixotropic materials and provides a shear thinning effect. The EDDY Pump’s ability to pump concentrated solids is perfect for moving viscous materials with less than 5% free liquid; an impossible task for centrifugal pumps.

Process Pumps (Types)

High Specific Gravity

The EDDY Pump is excellent at moving heavy materials through long pipelines. The EDDY Pump creates a turbulent flow that helps keep the heavy materials in suspension and moving down the pipeline.

Total Life Cycle/Ownership Cost

The EDDY Pump design and superior performance allows for a significantly decreased Ownership Cost over centrifugal and PD Pumps.

Please see link below to see a the Total Life Cycle and Ownership Cost Study conducted by one of the largest US Navy Ship Building Companies in the World, showing that 25 EDDY Pumps would save the US Military over $17,000,000 over 4 years in operation.

Process Pumps (Types)

High Production Capability

Up to 300% higher than a similar sized centrifugal pump in pumping non-organic material.

Process Pumps (Types)

High Concentration Capability

Less fluid required to pump a given amount of material. Up to 80% solids by volume in-situ.

Process Pumps (Types)

High Abrasive/Corrosive Material Pump Ability

EDDY Pump does not require critical tolerances between the rotor and the volute, making the EDDY Pump the perfect solution for abrasive and corrosive applications that often cause significant issues for other pumps.   The EDDY Pump will outperform any pump in moving the most  abrasive fluids with minimal wear and no maintenance.  These include lime slurries, borax, drilling muds, and ash.

Economic Advantages

Pump less water, more solids and you have huge cost savings. To move the same amount of material the EDDY Pump will be smaller in size, lighter in weight, use less power and cost less than conventional equipment.   Further, there is no critical setup, eliminating the expense of balancing and alignment that other pumps incur.

Optimized Pumping Performance

Varying Rotor size will change the Flowrate and PSI

The EDDY Pump can be customized to a specific flow rate and Head requirement for an application simply by changing the rotor size. Each pump model has multiple rotor options available. This allows for the most efficient combination of pump and motor size for the job.

Mechanical Seal Support System

This Plan 53A dual-facing mechanical seal is completely self-contained and can be constructed using tungsten carbide and silicon carbide seal faces. The benefit of this seal system is that it doesn’t need any external flushing water. The self-contained seal support system consists of a pressurized tank filled with a water-glycol mixture which recirculates over the seal faces to protect the seal during pump operation.

EDDY Pump Components

The EDDY Pump consists of an

  1. Energy-generating rotor  attached to the end of a
  2. Drive shaft and placed within a
  3. Volute. . As the rotor begins to spin, it sets into motion the ambient fluid present within the volute and
  4. Adjoining intake chamber. At normal operating speed, this spinning fluid is forced down, into the hollow center of the intake chamber where it creates a high speed, swirling synchronized column of fluid
  5. Which agitates the material
  6. To be pumped (sludge, sand, clay etc.) This swirling column of fluid creates a peripheral
  7. “EDDY” effect which causes the agitated material to travel by reverse flow, up along the sides of the intake chamber, into the volute. Here the material, under pressure from below, is forced into the
  8. Discharge pipe.
