🚨 FOOTBALL BEHIND THE SCENES | WEEK 6 ⚽️ Japan 🤝 Bundesliga The presence of Japanese players in the Bundesliga (DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga) is often treated as a recent trend, but it’s the result of a long process where trust was built, tested and reinforced over decades, and where recruitment decisions became progressively less risky and more predictable. The link goes back to 1977, when Yasuhiko Okudera joined 1. FC Köln . At that time, Japanese football had little international credibility and visibility. Okudera didn’t arrive as a commercial bet or a symbolic signing, but he played, contributed and adapted to German football’s physical and tactical demands. Over the following decades, that initial perception was reinforced: Shinji Ono, Junichi Inamoto, Makoto Hasebe, Hiroshi Kiyotake, Atsuto Uchida, Shinji Kagawa, Hiroki Ito. Today, Japanese players are no longer viewed as special cases, and in the current season fifteen Japanese players are registered across Bundesliga squads, arriving through different countries. But why? Japanese player development typically prioritises: - Technical focus, accuracy instead of power - Tactical intelligence and discipline, understanding the game - Adaptability and strong collective mentality - Versatility - International focus, aiming to prepare academy players for European football Bundesliga football, especially outside the very top clubs, rewards exactly those traits: discipline, versatility, intensity, accountability and fast adaptation. The result is often a short integration curve, which is a critical advantage for clubs. The consequence of the sporting success was audience growth and broadcast interest in Japan, and the market grew precisely because Japanese players consistently earned their place on pitch. Football always comes before commercial. On another note, according to Football Benchmark data, between 2018/19 and 2024 there were 182 transfers of Japanese players to European first divisions. Japan is increasingly viewed as an undervalued talent pool, not an underdeveloped one, and that context helps explain why, in 2024, Red Bull acquired 100% of Omiya Ardija, becoming the first foreign entity to fully own a Japanese professional club. Football is an ecosystem driven by relationships. Those clubs, leagues, and countries that cultivate them creatively, by innovating and building sustainable networks, are the ones that will succeed. ✅ Hope you find it interesting. More next week.
