Yet a new report highlights a persistent disconnect: the financial systems designed to support adaptation are not reaching these frontlines. Klipriviersberg: A Treasure at Risk — and Why It Matters Now More Than Ever Just 10–11 km south of Johannesburg lies one of the city’s greatest natural assets: the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve. Spanning 680–700 hectares of Highveld grassland, koppies, streams, and remarkable biodiversity, it hosts 230+ bird species, 600–700 plant species, and mammals such as zebra, wildebeest, duiker, and blesbok. It also contains some of the densest Iron Age archaeological sites on the Witwatersrand. For many of us in Johannesburg South, Klipriviersberg has been a refuge — a place to hike, reset, and share nature with our families. But the reserve is under threat. A Disturbing Decline In recent years, wildlife losses have been severe, with anecdotal estimates suggesting up to 80% of some species poached, despite a full‑time, tender‑appointed security presence. It raises difficult questions about oversight and who benefits when a protected space becomes less protected. The reserve is managed by Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo, supported by the passionate Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Association, but volunteers can only do so much against systemic neglect and organised poaching. When Decline Becomes Convenient For years, rumours have circulated about interest from well‑connected developers seeking estate‑style opportunities. Conveniently, such proposals require far fewer environmental hurdles once nature has thinned itself out — quite a stroke of luck for anyone with impeccable timing. Of course, no one would want wildlife to vanish. And it would be completely unfair to picture certain individuals enjoying premium whisky on private decks overlooking land that once belonged to the public. Completely unfair. Entirely hypothetical. Why This Matters Urban nature reserves like Klipriviersberg provide: 🌳 Accessible green space for all 🌱 Exposure to biodiversity for young people 🦓 Protection of cultural and archaeological heritage ⛈️ Ecological resilience in a changing climate When such places decline, public benefit and public trust decline with them. A Call for Stewardship South Africa doesn’t lack natural beauty — it lacks consistent stewardship of shared spaces. Klipriviersberg deserves protection, accountability, and a louder collective voice from those who love it. With governments poised to meet in Bangkok in the coming weeks for another round of informal negotiations for the new #PlasticsTreaty, it's great timing for this new report from WWF which provides further evidence to challenge common assumptions about the need for global participation for an effective treaty. The report concludes that for many high-risk plastic products, just 10–20% of coordinated global demand could be enough to make common rules commercially viable and begin shifting production and markets worldwide. This supports Environmental Investigation Agency's report earlier this year, Bending the Curve, which showed that coordinated action for ambitious first movers, especially including major producers, could reduce plastic production by up to 45% while sharply lowering waste and climate impacts. To accommodate speakers from around the world, the workshop will run in two sessions, 10:00-11:15 CET and 15:00-16:15 CET. The afternoon session will also have simultaneous interpretation in Portuguese and Spanish. Urban areas face growing challenges in ensuring food and nutrition security due to rapid urbanisation, climate change, and rising socio-economic inequalities. Food markets, which provide affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food, are uniquely positioned to address these issues. By aligning efforts across sectors and government levels, cities can transform markets into powerful tools to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition. We will deep dive into the topic with Kristie Daniel, Director of HealthBridge’s Livable Cities program, and Tran Thi Kieu Thanh Ha, Manager of HealthBridge’s Livable Cities program in Vietnam, to learn what makes markets so important to access nutritious food.
