On Sept. 27, 2024, Tropical Storm Helene brought devastating wind and rains to Western North Carolina, creating horrific floods and landslides that claimed lives, destroyed infrastructure, damaged homes and businesses and ripped apart forests. But the people of the North Carolina mountains are rebuilding. Carolina Public Press is with them to look at what happened and the road forward.

Mountains Unbowed represents all of CPP’s ongoing coverage of Helene, listed chronologically from the day it hit, through the storm’s aftermath and the road to recovery.
