Budget 2025 takes positive steps for our tech community. It keeps investment flowing into areas where local companies already lead — AI and quantum technologies — and creates opportunities for companies to access capital and find customers. A $900-million investment in Canadian AI infrastructure will expand compute capacity and open new opportunities for companies building and deploying AI.  Renewed federal venture capital programs and a Buy Canadian policy could make it easier for early-stage companies to raise capital and compete for government contracts. One positive signal for startups is the renewal of federal programs that help Canadian companies develop stronger IP strategies. Among them is ElevateIP, which will receive $84.4 million over the next four years. Since 2022, ElevateIP has helped thousands of startups protect what they build and keep ownership in Canadian hands.  In Waterloo Region, we’ve seen rising demand for IP support as startups become more intentional about protecting and commercializing their ideas. New funding announcements are encouraging, but what matters now is how quickly that support reaches the founders and teams doing the work. Execution speed will determine whether these commitments make a real difference. At Communitech we’re ready to work with partners across government, industry and the founders in our community, to ensure programs are implemented quickly, effectively and with real impact. Waterloo Region has everything it needs to compete globally.  Now it’s about moving fast and working together to realize that potential!

Imagine visiting a government website and instead of digging through pages and broken links, you just ask: “How do I renew my driver’s license if I moved to Ontario from Quebec and my old license just expired?” Or you're on a real estate site and you ask: “Find me 3-bedroom homes under $700K in Montreal with a backyard and walking distance to a English elementary school.” And it just works. Clear answers, curated results, direct links, and no guesswork. That’s the promise of NLWeb, Microsoft's new open source project led by R.V. Guha, the mind behind RSS, RDF, and Schema.org. This time, he’s applying web standards to something bold: making websites truly conversational. What makes NLWeb different? It’s not just a chatbot bolted onto a website. NLWeb gives websites native language understanding, allowing users and AI agents to ask real questions and get real answers based on actual site content. No scraping. No vague LLM hallucinations. NLWeb uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to let websites communicate directly with AI in a structured, controlled way. It gives power back to developers and site owners, not third-party guesswork engines. This is the foundation of the agentic web, where AI agents don’t just fetch content. They act on your behalf.
