Nice and simple
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 February 2023I'm doing my masters in neuroscience after being out of uni for 5 years. This book is simple to use and easy to understand. I've walked out of class thinking I don't have a clue what they are talking about and I refer back to this book at home, guess what, I do understand. Yay

Great
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 November 2018This is great for anyone, from those with no prior knowledge to those with a degree under their arms. It's a great reference book and is well written and fun to read. It's a little expensive but compared to other neuroscience textbooks is a steal!

Not for a beginner student.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 February 2018I found it a little poorly structured so even in the dummy stakes I must be pretty dim. Terminology was introduced without warning only to find a definition further on. It could have included more diagrams (or more complete ones labeled, for example to show anterior and posterior, ventral and dorsal and such things). Because of the amount of terminology and concepts a glossary would have been nice. I'm not entirely new to the nervous system and hoped to catch up especially with the chemistry. Fair enough the chemistry was explained adequately. What I found was a frequent need to get onto google to get an alternative explanation and diagrams so at least the book led me to an understanding but not by itself.
It's probably difficult to find a good beginner-to-intermediate text book and this one is adequate but if you are a beginner or your knowledge is outdated be prepared for work beyond this book.

KB5 out of 5 starsBreaks it down to a digestible level
Reviewed in the United States on 20 January 2021I bought this book to supplement a research proposal I was putting together. I am not a neuroscientist (obviously), but this book included great references that I was then able to use in order to head off in the right direction. The format of the book is such that you can read individual chapters without having to read the entire thing, something critically important for a book like this.

ariane5 out of 5 starsGreat to learn about the basics of neuroscience
Reviewed in Canada on 20 February 2025I needed to review the basics of neuroscience for my M.Sc. and I found this was really helpful and interesting. I would also recommend to anyone who is trying to know more about the brain. I also liked the structure of the book as it felt like a step-by-step story.

Brett Allen5 out of 5 starsAll-encompasing body of knowledge
Reviewed in Canada on 24 April 2022This book is very informative and contains a good early body of knowledge for anyone trying to understand how their brain works. Some concepts are a little more advanced and being able to read it does take some vocabulary skills. Additional parts of the book actually relate medical devices, medicine, and neural disorders to how they work on the brain.
